Welcome.

August 19, 2011

You’ve caught us in a transition. Lucky you!

There’s been loads of rearranging behind the scenes this year.  Stay tuned for proper announcements of work in development, future plans, and a full reboot of the site with all of our past shows’ information handy.

In the meantime, here’s who we are and what we do. Also check out our About section for a full rundown:

Making Strange Theatre Company is dedicated to creating dazzling, daring new works by premiering texts from abroad for the Irish stage, and creating original theatrical pieces with a focus on collaboration with international practitioners. Of particular interest to the company is exploring the stories we tell ourselves—that is, not the storytelling of an entire time and culture, but the stories we as individuals tell ourselves to get through our lives, and how they grow and change.

Making Strange’s trad-rock-mashup extravaganza Pop Céilí will perform one night only at the ABSOLUT Fringe Festival Club in September.

Currently in development for 2012 is an original piece, You Remember the Stories You Wish Were True as part of Fishamble’s New Play Clinic.

In the meantime, contact us directly with any queries.  Thanks!

Hope to see you there!

Our nominees:
Kate Brennan for Best Supporting Actress
Matt Torney for Best Director

The full list of nominees is available here, accompanied by a very encouraging article highlighting the rise of younger, enterprising companies in a tough economic climate.

EDINBURGH!  These weeks are flying by but any individual day feels incredibly long in an entirely awesome way:  shows, gatherings, singalongs, schmoozing, drinks, dancing…

Since our last update, we received a few more lovely reviews, in Time Out London (we’re also a critic’s pick from them) and Scotland on Sunday.  We’ve had excellent crowds and some very special guests in the audience, including Denise Van Outen and Malcolm McLaren.  We also caught Mr. McLaren’s show History is for Pissing on, which was both extremely funny and thought-provoking.

We have a few recommendations for shows to catch in the last week:

Dead Cat Bounce–Wired: These friends of ours from Dublin are tearing up the Fringe with 5-star reviews, sold-out crowds, and barnstorming performances at Spank and Late ‘n’ Live.  They’re exceptionally and maddeningly talented but don’t hold that against them, just go and laugh like crazy.

Sirqus Alfon–Eurotrash: This show is really hard to describe and unlike anything else we’ve ever seen before…four Lycra-clad Swedes perform ’90s dance tunes while upgrading themselves via computer.  It is beyond hilarious.  Plus you get magical 3-D rainbow glasses.
We hope we have more updates from our last 8 shows…

Another great review out today…

August 13, 2009

Fest magazine, which has featured us heavily in the past two issues, has this review up today online.  We’re delighted with their coverage of us and particularly happy about the review!

Big thanks to everyone who’s been in at the show so far, and we hope you spread the word as the weekend approaches!

More updates as more press etc. hit the world…

Luck is up and running!

August 12, 2009

We’re five shows in and have just received our first review–a delightful piece from the List who give us four stars and call the show “a flashing, pinging, breathless whirlwind of a ride.”  Check it out here.

All in all, the show is going well so far with wonderful audience responses.  Our first preview was particularly awesome with a very special surprise guest star–Clarke Peters of The Wire was feeling lucky and came onstage to play blackjack for some whiskey!  He stuck around after the show for a beer and had great things to say.  He’s an entirely lovely guy and we look forward to catching the Fringe show he’s directed, Blondes.

More news as reviews roll in…

First preview tonight!

August 7, 2009

After arriving last Saturday, we’ve been settling in and getting ready for the show–our first preview is tonight and we’re very keen to get this in front of the lovely Edinburgh crowds.

In the meantime, we’ve received two pieces of fantastic advance press in Fest magazine: a mention in (and the header image for) an article on the rise of what they term “confessional theatre,” and a further piece that’s a really great preview of the show.

They’ve also selected us as one of their theatre picks of the Fringe!

Back at home, the good folks at Culch.ie ran a great mention of us last week in their Edinburgh Fringe guide here.

We’ll keep you posted as more press rolls in…we’ve got an interview with the BBC on the horizon.  All press links will be collected in the sidebar to the right.

Hope to see you at the show!

The countdown to Edinburgh is on!

July 30, 2009

Why hello there and welcome.  You must have seen our link on some printed material recently.

As we prepare to head to Edinburgh in just a few days, we’re rebuilding the website one show at a time.  If you click on one of the pages and it’s blank, hang in there: it’s just a matter of time. If you’d like any additional info on our past work, do drop us a line at makingstrangetheatre [at] gmail.  (You know that needs a .com.  We’re just trying to avoid spammers.)

We do hope you’ll be joining us in Edinburgh for our critically acclaimed and wildly popular Luck.  While we get all our fabulous news and reviews posted in the next day or two, we’ll point you to the following sites:

SCAMP, our phenomenal producers;

Our page on the Underbelly site (has full show schedule and booking information);

and we’re also on Facebook, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Thanks for visiting, and we look forward to seeing you at the show!

Welcome to the rebuilt Making Strange site!

It’s a bit of a work in progress at the moment…

Meanwhile, can we interest you in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot?

MAKING STRANGE THEATRE COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH PROJECT ARTS CENTRE PRESENTS THE IRISH PREMIERE OF

THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT
BY STEPHEN ADLY GUIRGIS

Downtown Purgatory… A lawyer who believes in divine mercy above divine justice is appealing Judas Iscariot’s sentence of eternal damnation. With a fateful kiss, Judas betrayed Jesus in Gethsemane. Was Judas an avaricious man? An instrument of divine will? A thwarted revolutionary? Does he deserve to be forgiven?

A colourful host of saints and sinners are called in as witnesses, from Satan and Pontius Pilate to Mother Teresa and Sigmund Freud. Blistering with passion and told in the raw and poetic language of the New York streets, this play finds beauty in the most unexpected places.
